We drive The stylish A-class sedan
By Siyamthanda Nqwelo
My first review for the year 2020 and what better way than to greet everyone by saying “Hey Mercedes”.
By now everyone should be familiar with that amazing feature that Mercedes Benz has where you can vocally interact with the car and give it voice commands. I’ll be honest and say it was the first thing I did when I got behind the driver’s seat on the sleek and sexy Mercedes Benz A200 Sedan. From the A200 hatch that we have grown to love throughout the years to the Sedan, Mercedes Benz made a vehicle fit for any queen. I say queen because at first glance you’d maybe mistake it for the Mercedes Benz CLA but as you take a closer look you’ll see that this one has softer lines to it.
If we took it back to a few years ago and you jumped from the C-Class to the A-Class you would feel the difference in the comfort and in the drive but now everything is streamlined and moving from the C-Class to the A-Class is much more seamless. In our generation we all had the idea that the A200 hatch was for your mid to early 20s and in your early 30s you would then transition to your C-Class and now with the sedan out, there really is no need to make the transition as you will get the same level of confidence and respect whether you’re out at a club or at a golf course. The A- Class sedan for me is perfect for a person who doesn’t necessarily want the CLA but want a compact car that is also a sedan as the 430L boot space is perfect for those shopping trips.
The front seats have this cocoon feel about them and you just nestle in them with ease while the backseat though it looks small is quiet spacious with lots of legroom. In the A200 sedan you’re honestly spoilt for choice when it comes to where you prefer to sit in the vehicle. The ambient lighting inside the car made me park the car and just sit there in happy mood.
With a 1.3-litre turbocharged engine and 120 kW and 250 Nm of power, it isn’t particularly built for speed but more comfort and style. The A200 sedan has a top speed of 230km/h and a claimed acceleration reach of 100km/h in 8.1secs paired with the 7speed automatic transmission. Once put into sports mode you’re so mesmerized by personalized digital cockpit that you don’t notice the sharpened steering, stiffened suspension and amplified throttle response. Fuel consumption is claimed to sit between 5.2 L/100 km while I enjoyed pushing it and reached an embarrassing 8.5L/100km.
Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan is priced as follows:
A-Class Sedan A200 R541 000
A- Class Sedan A200d R579 000
A-Class Sedan A250 R615 771
