Speed and grace is the unique combination that defines the core of the Mazda CX-5 design. Mazda’s signature ‘KODO –Soul of Motion’ design philosophy has evolved to represent a boldness, elegance and maturity that set the standard for a new generation of SUVs.

Comfort, technology and spaciousness meet quality finishes everywhere you turn. The comfort and space still baffles me actually, even tall individuals will sit comfortably. When you in the drivers seat you find that the cabin surrounds you with carefully positioned controls.

As you switch on the vehicle the windscreen will alert you with the full-colour Head-Up Display. From the higher, more angled centre console to the redesigned instrument panel, as well as the use of space and storage across front and rear rows, the Mazda CX-5 is a triumph of design.

Our test car was the 2.2DE AWD which houses a 2.2 turbodiesel engine producing 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque coupled to a six-speed, torque converter automatic transmission which sends power to all four wheels. Power delivery is great, we find the diesel engine offers a much better performance than it’s sibling petrol sibling, This together it’s smooth suspension and a host driving aids such as Lane keep assist, Cruise Control and Emergncy Braking makes the driving experience a pleasant one.

Mazda Claims a fuel economy figure of 5.7-litres/100km. During our test, however, we averaged around 7.1 litres/100km.

The Mazda CX-5 Akera exterior features an imposing grille, sharp headlights, dual exhausts, and chrome inserts around the windows that make the Mazda stand out. With standard features like a sunroof, all-round electric windows, electrically adjusted front seats, and six airbags, let’s not forget its Bose sound system. What more could you ask for than a long distance road trip.

In summary I was hooked from the moment of its arrival, its boldness, beauty, it just demanded the arrival attention. This is one brilliant car and I am happy that I see it more often on the roads. Its smooth drive, comfortable seats and the 10 speaker Bose sound system will not allow you to drive home instead in this car an endless drive is all you need.

Retailing at R634 000 with a standard three-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a three-year/unlimited km service plan. The Mazda CX-5 is a must buy.

The diesel is a bit noisy, I prefer the petrol engine
