We drive the Volvo XC60
By Lebohang Kobeli
Let me start by saying that Volvo is a peculiar brand that offers quality and unique products making it difficult to compare it with any other brand. Initially, we had asked for the Volvo XC90 however on delivery we were surprised with the XC60 T6 AWD Inscription.
The design, it’s unlike anything else that’s out there at the moment. From the front, the Thor hammer lights to the long bonnet that looks elegant and imposing. On the lower side rear doors, you find the inscription signature design in chrome. The Volvo is coated in a Crystal White Metallic finish that blends in well with the chrome. Also, it has a beautiful 20’ 8-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels.
The interior is beautiful with its Nappa Perforated Leather – Charcoal in Charcoal upholstery, the driftwood décor inlays feel on the centre console, even the few plastic trims do not feel cheap. I loved the Swedish flag tag on the seat and on the dashboard chrome trim, it added to the character and is a subtle reminder that you’re driving a Swedish Luxury Vehicle.
The Boot space is quite spacious, I managed to fit a golf bag with clubs plus we went grocery shopping and managed to fit all our groceries without having to fold the rear seats.
Tech and Safety
A touch infotainment screen is at the heart of the way you interact with the XC60. It combines sleek design with ease of use, reducing distraction with bold, clear graphics and has fewer buttons.
Its portrait format makes reading information and maps especially easy, while the 9-inch screen is so responsive, you can use it wearing gloves. The driver has a heads-up display, A digital driver display that puts important information right in front of you, and its brightness adjusts to the surroundings so it’s always easy to read. An advanced voice control function allows you to operate climate control, navigation, media and telephone functions using natural speech patterns – no need to memorize set prompts or commands. I almost forgot to mention that it comes with a quality sound system from Bose and Welkins which is a delight.
Engine, Suspension and Drivetrain
The XC60 T6 inscription comes in 4 driving modes which are Eco, Comfort, Dynamic and Off-Road, all modes have specific air suspension setups which the car adjusts to by raising or lowering itself. When it comes to the drive of the car, it is very comfortable It rides on air suspension which means that there’s little to no uncomfortable bumps on the road, driving it back from Haarties, it felt like we were sitting on air, hovering over the roads, two of my passengers even fell asleep during the trip. Piloting that beautiful space is one thing I will hardly forget. Take it from me, the XC60 T6 inscription is worth every rand!
The Volvo XC60 is priced as follows:
The entry-level XC60 Momentum starts from R692 600, the sporty XC60-R-design from 746 550 while the luxurious XC60 starts from R742 550.
